Got allergies? Ditch your regular Vitamin C

It’s allergy season!

If you’re starting to experience the typical allergy symptoms, here’s what you can do to manage symptoms quickly.

I always encourage using vitamin C alongside Claritin, Flonase and other prescriptive seasonal supports. Vitamin C is a natural anti-histamine and can improve the duration of your symptom relief.

However, if you’ve taken Vitamin C before, you know it can be harsh on the digestive tract, especially when taken in higher doses, and your body can struggle to absorb the quantities you need for improved immune response and other benefits.

Switch to Buffered C

Buffered vitamin C – created by adding a mineral salt to ascorbic acid – resists changes in PH, making it less acidic and improving both absorption and lowering side effects. While adding a mineral such as calcium or magnesium may seem like a tiny change, buffering vitamin C allows you to take higher doses with less risk of stomach upset, making it great for people with sensitive stomachs.

Compared to buffered vitamin C, the unbuffered form is less bioavailable and more likely to cause discomfort, so buffering the vitamin helps improve absorption and introduce much needed minerals

You can take much higher doses of buffered C- sometimes 2-3x times the RDA. At these higher doses, you’ll see a longer relief of symptoms.

Here’s my favorite brand of buffered C.

ProTip:

I always recommend taking vitamin C with food and always with a source of naturally occurring C, like  celery, grapefruit  or pineapple juice.  You’ll get even more absorption!
